Weekly Update from the Superintendent

Dear students, staff, families and community,

The Mount Baker School Community is mourning the loss of Mr. Jim Freeman who was an amazing former educator, coach, and school board member.  He touched many lives during and after his tenure with our District.  Here is a lovely article about this legendary man.  Our hearts are with his family and friends.

Congratulations to our varsity football team members and coaches on an epic win over Nooksack Valley High School to advance to the state championship game with Royal High School this coming Saturday, December 3 at 12:00 p.m. at Harry Lang Stadium.  It was such a great experience to be among all of the Baker fans as we packed Civic Stadium last Saturday.  Special congratulations to Coach Ron Lepper on his 200th career win!  He is the third coach in Whatcom County to achieve this milestone!

The deadline for signing up for the Winter Pantry Program is Thursday, December 1.  This program provides families with breakfast and lunch foods that children can prepare for themselves during winter break.  Families of students at all Mount Baker Schools can sign up.

I am thrilled to let you know that in June of 2022, Mount Baker School District received a grant from the Washington State Department of Health to plan for a school-based health center in the district. This work grew out of existing partnerships and identified community need. Over the past 5+ months, the Healthy Baker Advisory Committee, comprised of staff, healthcare providers, community service agencies, and school administration has planned how to assess community needs and determine how and why a school-based health center will serve Mount Baker students and Families.

We are still looking for Mount Baker parents and/or caregivers who are interested in serving on this committee. If you are interested, please fill out this form.Student engagement will be led by a team of students December - February, where they will conduct focus groups, interviews, and surveys with their classmates.

As part of this process, we need to hear from you. As parents and caregivers of Mt. Baker students, we rely on your input to create a health center that best meets your needs and the needs of the entire school community. We are requesting you complete this survey at your earliest convenience. The survey for parents and caregivers will be open beginning Wednesday, November 30th to Friday, December 16th. It is also available in Spanish and Russian languages. There is an opportunity to win two $50 gift cards if you take the survey!

You can learn more about the school-based health center planning process on this webpage. If you have any questions, please let me know or email healthybakersbhc@mtbaker.wednet.edu.

Sincerely,

Mary Sewright, Superintendent
