Weekly Update from the Superintendent

May 25, 2022

Dear students, staff, families and community,

Our flags are at half-staff in honor and remembrance of the victims who tragically lost their lives on May 24, 2022, at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.  We share in the heartbreak we are feeling for families who have lost a loved one due to this senseless act of violence.  We know that children and teens process this news in different ways.  We have counselors available at each of our schools to assist students and staff who may need some extra support.  Students are encouraged to reach out to counselors and other adults at school at any time.  These resources are available to support parents when talking to children about acts of violence.

Mount Baker School District strives to provide school environments where everyone feels accepted and valued.  We have full-time counselors, mental health specialists, and family service coordinators who provide direct support and services to families.  I also want to call your attention to mental health and counseling services. Nationwide, including Mount Baker, we are seeing students and adults struggling emotionally and socially, which has increased the need for mental health resources.  We have supports in place, but it is so important that we come together as a community to ensure we are recognizing symptoms of trauma to ensure the right support is made available to those who need it.  If you have any questions or concerns, donā€™t hesitate to contact a counselor at your studentā€™s school.

The Lynden Police Department in partnership with the US Department of Homeland Security is hosting an educational event regarding on-line safety this Thursday, May 26 at 6:30 p.m. Here is a link for more information about Online Safety:  A Parents Guide to Protecting Children on the Internet.

Summer is just around the corner, so I want to make you aware of Meal Resources for Summer 2022.  These are resources for all community members and not just Mount Baker students.  Visit our website frequently to stay informed regarding upcoming activities and resources available this summer.

We are at the tail end of our spring athletics season.  Junior High baseball and soccer wrapped up their season today.  The high school softball team travels to Pasco for the state tournament.  Track is headed to Eastern Washington University for their state competition.  Our boys golf team is off to Spokane.  Good luck to all of our student athletes!

Thank you for being part of such a caring community and supporting the well-being of all of our kids as well as one another!
