Susan Kelley

Six Whatcom County public school teachers have been named as finalists for a new award that honors excellence in education; one of the finalists is our very own Susan Kelley from Kendall Elementary School.

The Brown & Brown Excellence in Education Award Program will honor Mrs. Kelley and the other five finalists during an ice cream social at the Jansen Art Center, 323 Front St., Lynden, on May 22, 2024 from 4 to 6 p.m. The winning teacher will be presented with $5,000; the presentation will start at 5 p.m., and the public is invited.

Brown & Brown, Inc. is a leading insurance brokerage firm with about 500 locations worldwide, one of which is in Lynden, WA. Paul Kenner, a long-time employee of Brown & Brown of Washington, describes the award as enabling ā€œstudents, parents and the public to give gratitude and support for deserving Whatcom County public school teachers,ā€ and that their company "wants to help ensure that Whatcom County students and educators will have generations of empowerment and support in building the future of our community.ā€

A nominating parent explained to Brown & Brown that Susan Kelley ā€œhas been teaching 40 years with the last 10 years at Kendall Elementary in the Mount Baker School District. She is a driving force in behind the Kendall Science Fair, where students do science projects and document them for presentation in the fair. Kelley also has led students in raising salmon eggs, butterfly larvae and a hamster, increasing their interest in science. ā€œMrs. Kelley is excited about science, and her students catch that excitement!ā€

Congratulations to Susan Kelley on her nomination, and thank you for your dedication to our students!
