Weekly Update from the Superintendent | 5/17/2023

Dear Parents, Students, Staff, and Community Members,

Please join us for a wonderful evening of music at the Junior High and High School Spring Band Concert tomorrow, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. Our student musicians have practiced hard for this event, and they are looking forward to entertaining you all.

Mt. Baker FFA made us Baker Proud at the state FFA convention in Kennewick.  Seventeen students participated in a Career Development Event.  Food Science placed 6th in state, and Sophia Patten placed 8th in Vet Science.  Ag Marketing and Vet Science competed well for their first time. Conduct of Chapter Meetings placed 6th in sub-state.  State Proficiency winners were Sophia Patten in Specialty Animal Production and also in Specialty Crop Production. Makenzie Tucker placed 2nd in Swine Production, Zack Zender placed 1st in Diversified Livestock Production, and Kaylee Wahl-Knaus was 1st in Beef Production.  Kaylee was also a finalist for Star State Farmer. Congratulations to our FFA members and advisors!

Our students love to read!  The library team is excited to announce that 112 4th-6th grade students from across the district have completed the optional 2023 Sasquatch Challenge!  This challenge is not easy and it took a lot of hard work and dedication. We are so proud of our Mount Baker readers!

Thank you for all the support you have given your students with this challenge.  Many teachers and parents read nominated titles aloud, encouraged and allowed students to read and listen to eBooks and audiobooks from the Whatcom County Library System, and purchased copies of the titles for their own libraries.  All of this effort is appreciated and made a difference!

This accomplishment will be celebrated with the 16th annual Sasquatch Field Trip on June 2nd at the Deming Log Show grounds.  Way to go readers!

We are also celebrating our Track athletes, golfers and the softball team. They will be competing at Bi-Districts this week.  Good luck to our student athletes!

Go Baker!

Sincerely,

Mary Sewright, Superintendent
