Weekly Update from the Superintendent

Dear students, staff, families and community,

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to all of our certificated staff members!  They give their all to make a positive difference for our students! The awesomeness they bring forward every day is noticed and appreciated!

Tomorrow I will be honoring two amazing leaders in our District at the Annual Washington Association of School Administrators Award Luncheon.  Congratulations to Senior, Edith Contreras-Moreno who will receive a WASA Student Leadership Award.  Edith has excelled academically and is an accomplished musician and athlete.  She has also volunteered in our schools and community to make a difference for others.  Niki Kuklenski will receive a WASA Community Leader Award for her continuous dedication to our community on and off campus with her therapy animals, volunteering for student activities, and an abundance of service to Mount Baker!  Congratulations Edith and Niki!

Make memories with your elementary child at the Parent-Child Prom this Saturday, May 13 at the MBHS Cafeteria from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.  Thank you to the MBHS ASB for hosting this fun event for our community!

I would like to take a moment to highlight a new program in support of our wonderful 9th graders.  Research shows that students who pass all their classes freshman year are 4 times more likely to graduate from high school.  Therefore, as part of our ongoing efforts to support 9th graders, the high school has expanded their Monday after school tutoring program to better assist and support our 9th grade students.  We encourage our freshman to stay after school on Mondays from 2:45-4:45 p.m. for ā€œFood for Thoughtā€; a chance to get one-on-one tutoring in English, math, and science, eat pizza and, who knows, maybe even win a raffle prize! All 9th graders are welcome; you can follow the smell of pizza every Monday afternoon into room 806 where the magic happens!

Mount Baker will not be able to supply summer meals this year. However, Mount Baker has partnered with the Common Threads Food truck! Common Thread's new food truck will be serving FREE, fresh, delicious meals to kids and teens ages 18 and under starting this July! The food truck will stop at multiple locations throughout the Mount Baker School District providing meals and fun, educational activities. Please share your feedback with these surveys:

You are not going to want to miss the Catherine Mahaffey East Whatcom Health Fair on May 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the East Whatcom Regional Resource Center.  It is a wonderful, free community event with fun activities and lots of resources.

The weather is predicted to be beautiful for days to come.  Happy Motherā€™s Day to all of our Mount Baker moms, grandmas, and special mother figures!  Thanks for all you do! Know that we appreciate and admire you all. Have a wonderful weekend!

Go Baker!

Sincerely,

Mary Sewright, Superintendent
