Dear students, staff, families and community,
Several people have reached out to me regarding the incident in Bellingham in which some candy that was confiscated at a middle school was thought to be laced with drugs including fentanyl. Fortunately, tests showed that the candy was not laced with any drugs. That said, we know there has been an increase in intentional and unintentional fentanyl use in Whatcom County and beyond. Please talk with your children about this drug and the dangers of accepting candy or gum from anyone when the content and source are uncertain. Here are some resources that you might find helpful:

Mount Baker School District provides prevention education in classrooms and has counselors including drug and alcohol interventionists and mental health professionals to support students. We Have Narcan available at all of our schools, and staff have been trained by our School District Nurse, Susan Windnagel.
I received some positive communication from the community regarding the community service from FFA members. I just love that our students strive for excellence and invest in our community in so many ways. Thank you to The Rome Grange President for sharing this positive experience:
āWe really appreciated having the FFA youth and your esteemed teacher Todd Rightmire come by last Saturday to help clean up the Rome Grange. Their good nature and positive willingness to give back to the community are the essence of citizenship, and proof in spite of our trying times that the future will be fine. Having our grounds spiffed up will really help us get ready for our spring and summer farmers market, and keep the Grange presentable for community use. On behalf of the Rome Grange membership, please extend my heartfelt thanks.ā
An abundance of thanks goes to our Administrative Professionals/Secretaries. This is Administrative Professionals Appreciation Day. They make our schools and departments welcoming places and keep everything running smoothly.
April is Occupational Therapy Month. These vital professionals make meaningful differences in the lives of our students. Thank you to our amazing Occupational Therapists, Jennifer Byrne and Tara Saideman, for their dedication to Mount Baker School District students.
